Sailing holidays in Croatia

View Flotillas | View Bareboats | View Gulets | View Villas | View Hotels

Croatia's spectacular Adriatic coast of a 'thousand islands' is a yachtsman's paradise, with some of the most varied and breathtaking scenery in the whole Mediterranean. To sail in steady breezes through the myriad of tiny islets that form the beautiful Kornati National Park in a true 'island hoping' fashion is an experience not to be missed. Sample the wonderful cuisine and the friendliness of the local people while exploring the larger lush, more populated islands of Brac and Solta. Each island holds a collection of small stone churches and red tiled houses, found tucked among the numerous pine-clad hillsides. Explore fortified towns like Dubrovnik, Hvar and Korcula with their medieval castles and Byzantine palaces all of which reflect on the coasts great and colourful history.

Cruising choice

The key to sailing the Croatian coast is in the choice of cruising areas. Croatia offers so much to see and to explore; one visit to the Dalmatian coast is never enough. You should consider the Croatian coast as three separate cruising areas, visiting each one on a separate holiday. With Sunscape Yachting bareboat charter customers can choose from three main cruising areas: Sukosan and Biograd provide easy access to the northern Kornati islands, while the marina at Split offers ideal for sailing amongst the larger islands of central Dalmatia and the southern Kornati National Park. From the southern port of Dubrovnik we offer an idyllic cruising area that takes in the holiday village of Cavtat, just south of Dubrovnik's old city walls, then out along the Peljesac peninsular famed for its wine production and on to the beautiful island of Korcula.

Life Croatian style

Cruising distances are generally short and so days are set at a leisurely pace. Most itineraries will provide a pleasant combination of mooring on town quays, in bays with quiet anchorages and in sophisticated marinas, so you can be assured of shelter and good entertainment each evening. There is usually a choice of restaurants ashore and whilst you remain at the bar the enterprising locals will normally keep the local pivo (beer) flowing. Colourful local markets provide an abundance of fresh fruits, fish, meat and vegetables, while the restaurants pride themselves on their varied and appetising menus. Fresh fish is popular, if not a little expensive, try Denex, the delicious local red Bream, or Calamari and 'Rock borer' mussels can be found on most menus. Local specialities include Raznijici, pork kebab and Cevapicici, delicious spicy meatballs. Taste Pag island cheese and smoked palmer ham (Prsuit) are popular starters and all can be washed down with some fine local wines.

The Weather

Croatia traditionally has a shorter summer season than its rival more southerly Mediterranean holiday destinations. Although temperatures and hours of sunshine do vary between May and late September the winds remain favourable, typically from the northwest at force 3-5. Becoming lighter in July and August when high-pressure systems sit over the central Med, sailing then is compensated by the normal arrival of northerly sea breezes.

Sail and Stay Holidays

Combine a week spent relaxing at one of our selected hotels or apartments in Trogir, Makarska or Dubrovnik, then sail for a week exploring the Dalmatian coast.
